Romance vs. Realism

Romance whispers that love can surmount the highest obstacles.

Realism tells you that the obstacles can get too big. For anyone.

Romance sighs that love will keep you warm on the coldest nights.

Realism reminds you about those nights when you sleep without touching one another.

Romance swoons about the way he looks at you, the way he touches you, the way he makes you feel like the most important thing in the world.

Realism snarls that of course you’re not the most important thing in the world, and you’d better remember that.

Romance breathes that love will find a way.

Realism kicks you in the stomach and tells you that it’s going to take work, goddammit, so you’d better roll up your sleeves and dive in, because you’re in for a long haul.

Romance tells you to put on those rose-coloured glasses and remember only the good things and ignore the not-so-good things.

Realism reminds you that’s what got you into trouble to begin with.

Romance reminds you how much you love each other.

Realism agrees.
