Anyone who has read this blog knows that one of my big life goals — capital “B” Big is to find happiness. It began probably about six years or so ago, when I began to realize just how happy I wasn’t with so many things — myself, the details of my life, the direction my life was taking, some of the people who were in my life. It took me years, and basically reaching rock bottom before I was finally able to get to the place that I’m at right now, where I feel that I have arrived at that place of happiness that for so long seemed to elude me.
The thing that I’ve learned — as cheesy as it sounds — is that happiness isn’t something that’s found outside of ourselves. We all have the capacity for happiness, the trick is to be able to allow it in.
I recently watched the movie ‘Happiness’ on GaiamTV, which really inspired me. I started thinking a lot – again – about happiness in my own life. Sure, we need to simply allow happiness into our lives, but it’s something that we need to be aware of — pay attention to. I think that if we lose sight of what we want, then happiness can slip from our grasp. So in the coming year I’ve re-committed myself to finding and allowing happiness into my life.
I’ve started by asking myself — what are some things that make me happy?
- My girls.
- My man.
- My friends.
- My home.
- Making time for myself.
How am I committing to these things in the new year?
Spending more quality time with my girls.
Continuing to make my relationship a priority.
Spending more time with my friends, particularly letting them know how important they are to me.
Continuing to work on making my home — our home — cozy and comfortable and “us”.
Continuing to do things for me — running, yoga, eating well. Who knows? Maybe I’ll finally make some time to start meditating.
Happiness. It’s right there for all of us. All we have to do is reach out and grab it.
